BOIL ADD MIX – Redesign

Task:

Design the branding and packaging for a meal kit that can feed 4-5 people.

Response:

One of the many design projects I was given while at Anderson University was to take a food product, and design new packaging for it. However, the form of the new packaging had to be something that was already in production. My original solution to this problem was to store spaghetti in a canister used for salt. The top of the canister had a lid that would revolve, letting the user control how much salt was used. While it was great for measuring spaghetti proportions, this would not work for other forms of pasta.

Almost 10 years later, I decided to revisit my favorite student project to see how I have improved. First, I would keep the guideline of reusing existing packaging. I also redesigned my original idea for the branding, turning “BAM! Dinner” into an anagram, “BOIL ADD MIX”. The BOIL ADD MIX brand would be founded in the early 20th century, providing meal kits for families in and out of wartime. This also inspired it’s art deco firework packaging; as this fictional brand would have moved into modern times, it’s loud, explosive imagery grabs the customer to say that that the world could end, but a warm, filling dinner can always be made with three simple instructions. Boil! Add! Mix!
